Anagen is the active phase of hair growth. This phase will last from two to six years. While in anagen the follicle has an intact dermal papillae located in the base of the follicle. 90% of scalp hair is normally in the anagen phase.

2

Catagen is the intermediate phase of growth, which lasts for only one to two weeks. As catagen approaches the dermal papillae become completely separated from the follicle.

3

Telogen is the resting phase. It will last five to six weeks before the follicle starts to return to the anagen phase. 10% of scalp hair is normally in this phase.

4

Return to anagen is the final stage. To return to anagen the base of the follicle must slide down and engage the dermal papillae thereby initiating new hair growth.
